Betty Jo Hooks, 83, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2026, in Madison, Georgia, following a lengthy illness. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Betty Jo will be remembered for her love of family, her Christian faith, her quick wit, and her gift for making others feel welcome.Born and raised in Atlanta, Betty Jo spent all of her life in Georgia. She and her beloved husband, Harvey E. Hooks, raised their children, Lisa and Kevin, in Jonesboro, where their home was a gathering place for family and friends. Whether hosting celebrations, cheering on her children's sports teams, or preparing one of her wonderful home-cooked meals, Betty Jo loved bringing people together. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, and her faith remained an important part of her life.Betty Jo and Harvey enjoyed many happy years on Lake Spivey, before moving to Eagles Landing in Stockbridge. Following Harvey's passing in March 2003, Betty Jo continued to embrace life, eventually settling in The Villages, where she enjoyed friendships, gardening, decorating, and entertaining. She also enjoyed working part-time at Chico's at Tanger Outlets until 2022. In 2024, she moved to Madison, Georgia, to be closer to family.Betty Jo was especially proud of her family. She was the loving mother of Lisa Hooks Potts and Kevin Hooks and grandmother to Morgan Potts Gamble(Mike), Mackenzie Potts Karanovich(Evan), and Harrison Potts(Sierra). She treasured celebrating her grandchildren's weddings and was delighted by the arrival of her great-grandson, McCoy Truman Gamble, whose face never failed to bring a smile to hers, even when seen only through FaceTime. Those who knew Betty Jo will remember her Southern hospitality, wonderful cooking, and the care she took in making every gathering special. Her pound cakes were legendary, her home was always welcoming, and she had a wonderful sense of humor. Her family will never forget the Halloween she dressed as a character from Blue's Clues to go trick-or-treating with her grandchildren — just one example of the fun-loving grandmother she was.Above all, Betty Jo loved her family and the life she shared with them. While she will be deeply missed, her family takes comfort in knowing she is now in Heaven with Jesus, reunited with her husband, Harvey, and with family and friends, who preceded her in death. She leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories, family traditions, laughter, and love. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Ford Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Georgia. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with interment at Jonesboro City Cemetery.
