Obituary

Bonnie Lee Turner, age 76, of Jonesboro, passed away on May 6, 2026. She was born on August 28, 1949, in Atlanta, GA to the late Robert L. and Evelyn Bates Chafin. Bonnie grew up in southwest Atlanta and graduated from Southwest High School in 1967. The following year, she married her beloved husband, Michael Turner. Together, they raised their family in Jonesboro and enjoyed 58 years of marriage.

Bonnie worked for many years at Woodward Academy as a paraprofessional and on the administrative staff. She also was an active church member who taught Sunday School and served her Lord and church family in numerous ways. Through the years, Bonnie cultivated creative and fulfilling hobbies that included playing the piano, sewing, calligraphy, and gardening. She also was an avid beach lover and enjoyed frequent trips to Florida.

Her strong Christian faith was central to her life, and she will be lovingly remembered as a faith-filled woman who sought to serve and exalt Jesus in all her endeavors. Bonnie particularly had a tender heart for those who are suffering, whether physically or emotionally. She was passionate about ministering to those who were ill or hurt, as well as elderly people who needed a listening ear. Her visits to comfort those in need often included one of her homemade poundcakes, a gift received by hundreds of grateful recipients through the years.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Bonnie cherished 28 years of being a grandmother. Affectionately known as 'Baba,' she sought to teach and influence her grandchildren in ways that shaped and formed their Christian faith.

She is survived by her husband, Michael M. Turner; children, Denise (Stephen) Tarpley of Jonesboro, Karen (Corey) Sherman of Sandy Springs, Allison (Efrain) Sanchez of McDonough; sister, Emily (Robert) Wade of Conyers; grandchildren, Sean Tarpley, Melanie Tarpley, Grace Sherman, Emily Claire Sherman, Mackenzie (Hilary) Sherman, Jared Sherman, Madeleine Harrison, Lillian Harrison, Turner Harrison; great grandchildren, Hayes Sherman, P.J. Sherman; and extended family members. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. She will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the Church. Dr. Mel Blackaby and Rev. Allen Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Ford Stewart Funeral Home. Interment will be at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, following the Church Service.
