Dorothy Mae Lowery Slaten (Miss Dot) went home to be with the Lord on December 25, 2015, Christmas morning. She was born the 2nd of five children to Charlie and Susie Lowery on December 2, 1933. After graduating high school Dot moved to Charlotte, NC, where she became a telephone operator for Southern Bell. It was there she met, fell in love with and married James (Jim) Slaten on May 10, 1953. Their 63 years together make her a career Army wife. She spent 20 years traveling with him and their 3 children from Puerto Rico to Alaska and many states in between. Always keeping a warm, comfortable and immaculately clean home wherever her family was stationed. She was an awesome cook, loved her plants, was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be dearly missed. Miss Dot was a great listener, never met a stranger and always was there to give advice. She was a prayer warrior and prayed for many; some she knew and other she only knew they had asked for and needed her prayers. She loved the Lord and never doubted there was a place for her in heaven. Miss Dot was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Susie Lowery; brothers, Marion (Bud) and Eddie Lowery. She leaves behind her husband, James (Jim) Slaten, Jr.; daughter, Susan Slaten Hyde; sons, James (Jimmy) Slaten, III (Barbara), Timothy Slaten (Glynnis); sister, Joann Powers (Paul); brother, Benny Lowery (Audrey), 3 granddaughters, Amber (Reuben), Alexis and Diedre, 6 great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Ford-Stewart Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Hinton Harris and Rev. Keith Barksdale will officiate. Interment Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday, January 1, 2016, 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
