Obituary

Douglas Slater Jewett age 63 of Morrow passed away on ¬October 26, 2023. He was born in Danvers, Massachusetts in 1960 and moved with his parents to Georgia in 1972. He returned annually to Massachusetts and New Hampshire to visit family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elwin and Ethel Jewett and his sister Martha Swindell. He is survived by his siblings: Deborah Properzio of Massachusetts and Bruce Jewett of New Hampshire; nieces Sarah Lavigne, Amanda Carter, Lucy Kropiwnicki, September Ingram, and Alyssa Jewett, nephew Nicholas Swindell, and 8 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Douglas graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983 with a major in Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration from Columbus University. He also received a Certificate in Voice Over Performance/Production from Clayton State University. He began his law enforcement career with the Clayton County Police Department. He was a Major and upon his retirement, a Police Major with the Clayton County Board of Commissioners. Douglas was a very dedicated and active member of the Morrow First United Methodist Church in Morrow, Georgia. His past church involvements and activities include service in the youth department as a teacher and counselor, as well as past and present service as Sunday School Superintendent and church photographer. He was a Disciple Bible Study graduate and instructor.
At the time of his death, he was serving Lay Leader and Service Chair with the W.I.N.G.S. Ministry, making weekly pickups from the Georgia Food & Resource Center, Inc. in Hampton for the church's food pantry, and representing the church on YouTube with a Midweek Devotional with Doug.
Douglas also was a member of United Methodist Men, Joyful Praise Ringers Bell Choir, a Certified Lay Speaker and Liturgist, a member of the Governance Board, Finance Committee, and The Ramblers Older Adult Ministry. He was recognized in 2005 as Outstanding Christian Educator of the Year and as Man of The Year in 2014 by the United Methodist Men. His other passion was sports car racing at Road Atlanta and various other race tracks. His memorial service will be on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 5 PM, at the Morrow First United Methodist Church, 5985 Jonesboro Road with Reverend Nelson Furtado officiating. The memorial service will be live streamed on youtube at www.youtube.com/@morrowmethodist .
