Obituary

In solemn remembrance, we announce the passing of Mr. James C. (Jim) Bell, Jr. (known more affectionately as "Jim") who departed this life on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at the age of 91. Born in Atlanta, GA, to the late James C. Bell, Sr. and Olivia J. Wooten Bell, Jim's presence graced the lives of all who knew him.

Jim's life was one of quiet strength and unwavering dedication. Educated at Forest Park High School and Georgia State University, he cultivated a profound sense of integrity and perseverance that defined his character.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Jim's service in the US Army reflected his commitment to duty and honor. Following his military service, he dedicated over four decades of service to Delta Air Lines, Inc. where his professionalism and leadership garnered him much respect and cultivated in lifelong friendships. He served as Election Coordinator for Clayton County and supervised many of the polling places during the election processes for many years.

A former member of First Baptist Church of Morrow, GA and an active member (since 1981) of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, GA. Jim's faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of his life. Serving as a deacon, then Chairman of Deacons for many years, and Sunday School teacher for over five decades, he shared his wisdom and compassion with all who crossed his path. Later in life, he became a regular contributor to Clayton News Daily, discussing Christian themes and inviting readers to join in a relationship with Christ. Additionally, he was very passionate about his time spent ministering and sharing the Gospel with soldiers. He started an Airport Ministry to all military servicemen and women coming through the Hartsfield International Airport en route to their deployments overseas. This helped so many of our fighting warriors with their needs. He did this for over 15 years.

Jim was a man who loved adventure, spending many years travelling the globe with his beloved wife. No matter how far he travelled, he also appreciated life's simple pleasures waiting at home. His personal interests included gardening, rooting for the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons, and spending time with his many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jim's legacy of love extends to his cherished family. He is survived by his darling wife of 69 years, Estelle Bell; children James C. Bell III (Leisha) and Jean Bell-Dumas (Norman); eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter Sarah Jane Bell Carne, brother Benson Bell, and sister Thelma Bell Camp.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, where Jim's life will be honored with reverence and solemnity. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 10-11 AM. Interment will follow at Camp Memorial Cemetery, where Jim will be laid to rest.
