Obituary

Mr. James McMillen age 87 of Jonesboro passed away August 24, 2017. Mr. McMillen was awarded several medals during his time in the military. He received medals for the Korean war, Vietnam war, received two Legion of Merit with Oakleaf awards, and a Bronze Star medal. James served in the 11th and 101st divisions and also in the Airborne Board. He served as a Senior Advisor in Vietnam. He also served as the commanding officer of the 16th Battalion at Fort Jackson. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel at Fort McPherson in 1978. After retiring from the military, James got a job at the Georgia Veteran Service at the VA office in Atlanta. He worked there for 21 years and retired there in 1999 at the age of 70. Mr. McMillen was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Jonesboro. He was preceded in death by 3 great-grandsons: Jacobsen Manross, Hodges Manross and Brandon Artavia. He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Kathleen McMillen, daughter: Susan Ford and husband Stan, grandchildren: Michael Ford, Ashley Ford Manross, Kevin Ford and Niki Artavia, and 8 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 1-3 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Azalea Estates Assisted Living, 105 Autumn Glen Circle, Fayetteville, GA 30215. A committal service will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton, Iowa at a later date.
