Mrs. Janet Stovall Sherling passed away on April 1, 2016, after a short fight with pancreatic cancer. She was born on November 17, 1939 in Albany, GA to the late Joseph Milton Stovall and Mattie Will Cleveland Stovall. She was also preceded in death by her sister Polly Stovall Sparrow. Janet was a member of Phi Mu Fraternity graduating Cum Laude from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia with a BS in Education and then earned her Master's from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. She taught school in Clayton County for over 30 years where she later became principal of Edmonds Elementary in Forest Park, Georgia. She was an avid genealogist for over 30 years. Janet shared her knowledge with others in the lineage societies that she belonged to including the DAR, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Colonial Dames of America, UDC, Jonestown Society, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of American, Daughters of 1812, Dames of the Court of Honor, Magna Charta, Beach and Bar, First Families of Georgia 1733-1787. Janet served as an officer on the Chapter and State level. She was a member of the National Stovall Family Association serving as an officer. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and the Merry Hearts Sunday School Class. She was a humble and gracious Southern lady only wanting to be referred to as a child of God. She was married to James E. Sherling, Jr. for 54 years. Her children Laura (Ty) Hicks and Mark (Karol) Sherling gave her 8 grandchildren; Thomas, James, William and Sarah Hicks, Andrew, Alyssa, Madeline and Youraslav Sherling. Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. Rev. Irvin Pearre and Rev. Hinton Harris will officiate. Interment will be at Leesburg City Cemetery at 4:30 PM on Tuesday in Leesburg, GA. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
