Obituary

Ret. MSG Joseph Paul Connelly, of McDonough, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Joseph E. and Elizabeth Connelly. Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Connelly.

Joseph honorably served in the U.S. Army, where he demonstrated his dedication to his country during the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Dominican Republic Conflict. After his military service, he continued his commitment to public service by working with the Department of Defense. Joseph was of the Catholic faith and attended Salem Baptist Church, where he found spiritual guidance and community.

He was a devoted grandfather, never missing an event his grandchildren participated in. Joseph was also an avid Notre Dame sports fan and spent over 50 years coaching youth sports, instilling values of teamwork and perseverance in countless young athletes. He was an active volunteer at the Heritage Park Veterans Museum, where he proudly gave tours and shared his experiences with visitors.

Joseph is survived by his son, Jay Connelly and his wife, Lynne, of McDonough; and his grandsons, Justin Connelly of McDonough, and Nathan Connelly and his wife, Ruth, of Jacksonville, Florida.

A funeral service to honor Joseph's life will be held on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Ford-Stewart Funeral Home with Deacon Paul McCormick officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home. A private burial with military honors will take place on Tuesday at Georgia National Cemetery.
