Rita Marie Treadwell Johnson passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 93 on Aug. 13, 2024. She graduated from Glynn Academy High School in 1948 and earned her B.S. in nursing from St. Teresa of Avila, Kansas City, MO in 1952. Rita was crowned Mrs. Atlanta and was the runner-up for Mrs. Georgia in 1966. She was an accomplished and dedicated nurse, a master gardener, lover of horses and Westerns and a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who loved to entertain. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dr. Charles Garden Johnson, and her parents, James Borden Treadwell and Caroline Rose Brunegraff, to whom she was an only child. She is survived by her six children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and community. A rosary and visitation will be held on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Ford-Stewart Funeral Home with a Rosary Service at 6:30 PM. The Memorial Mass will be held Monday, Aug. 19, at 12 noon. at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Jonesboro. The family will receive friends at a luncheon reception following the Mass.
