Obituary

Thomas Joseph Kiney, age 84, passed away Sunday October 27th with his daughter and son in law by his side. Tom was born May 31, 1935 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was the eldest son of Joseph and Frances Kiney. His family moved to Miami when he was 6 months. Although they moved back north for a short period, he spent much of his youth in Florida. As a young man, he attended St. Mary's Parochial school where he was an Alter boy and a Boy Scout. After graduating high school in St. Petersburg Florida, he attended St. Petersburg Junior College and obtained an Associate Degree as a Drafting Engineer. He worked for Florida Power during summers in college and after his graduation worked full time as a draftsman. In 1953 he joined the Naval Reserve then in 1955 he joined the United States Army as a reservist and was a member until he resigned his commission in 1962 at the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, both in Florida and Georgia. He moved his family to Jonesboro Georgia in 1964 and continued his engineering career. In 1970 he took a different career path and went to work for the Clayton County Sheriff's Department as a deputy. He worked in various departments throughout his tenure with the county and eventually retired in 1993. In 2002 he resumed working for the Sheriff's office as a special investigator and retired for a second and final time in 2006. Tom was a loving father and grandfather. He always had a smile and a joke for those he met. Surviving him are his daughter Karyn Cozad (Rhett Maughon) of Jonesboro, GA., his grandson Evan Cozad of Jonesboro GA., brother Terry Kiney (Eleanor) of Columbus, GA and nieces Trish Ross (Butch) of Signal Mtn., TN and Sarah Fary (Tim) of Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends on November 7th from 4 to 6PM at Ford-Stewart Funeral Home with a memorial to follow in the chapel - 2047 Highway 138 SE, Jonesboro, GA 30237. The memorial service will be directed by Pastor William L. Herndon.
