Willie E. Rhyne, age 76, of McDonough, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 14. A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, Willie will be remembered for his deep faith and commitment to his church community. He was a 1965 Graduate of Mt. Holly High School in Mt. Holly, N.C. and was proud of leading the 1963 football team to the State Championship, a record that hasn't been broken since. Willie served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War, 1969-1971, and was discharged with a rank of E4. He served on the Airport Ministry at Hartsfield International Airport for 15 years where he led countless soldiers to Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Ruby Rhyne; his brother, Edward Johnson Rhyne; and his step-son, Robert Womack. Willie is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Rhyne; his daughter, Melanie (Michael) Rhyne Harte of Mt. Holly; his step-daughter, Salena Womack Turner of Hampton; his grandchildren, Christopher Harte and Jessica Harte, both of Mt. Holly; and his step-grandchildren, Tyler Woods and Austin Woods. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and friends. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, August 24, at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro, with Rev. Allen Davis and Dr. Lanny Loe officiating. The family will receive friends at the church starting at 11:00 AM on the same day. A graveside service will follow on Sunday, August 25, at 3:00 PM at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery, 1508 Charles Raper Jonas Hwy, Mt. Holly, NC 28120, where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family request a Memorial Donation to your favorite Veterans Organization in Memory of Willie E. Rhyne.
